Bulgaria  Rodhopes

The Rhodope mountains stretch some 240km from east to west in Southern Bulgaria, not far from the border with Greece. Goylam Perelik is the highest peak, at 2,191 metres, but the Rhodopes’ charm is not so much its wild summits but rather the pine forests blanketing its slopes and the many hidden villages, living to a different rhythm than our time-constrained frenetic world. It also has many caves and gorges as well as abundant biodiversity, both in the skies with an immense wealth of birdlife to see, such as vultures and eagles, but also on the ground, in the pine forests, that are home to brown bears, wild boar, deer and wolves.

While the western Rhodopes may be higher and less populated than the east, with its softer, more Mediterranean climate, visitors will enjoy an equally warm welcome in the Muslim and Christian villages like Yagodina, Trigrad, Borino, Orehovo and Kosovo in the west, or in Gorno Pole, Madzharovo, Parperikon and Kardjali in the east. The local people are curious and keen to satisfy your thirst for new experiences and memorable encounters in a marvellously pure and unspoiled natural envi¬ronment. It is this charm and authenticity that make this such a wonderfully fulfilling destination to visit and contribute to through time-honoured traditions and tasks. Relish your time unhurried in this land of Orpheus.
