Roaming the dry-stone trails of Provence


The Monts de Vaucluse and the Luberon, in Provence, are two magnificent landscapes that remain virtually unspoilt and intact. They have been crafted over the centuries by the remarkable arts and talents of rural folk that you’ll get the chance to discover through excursions deep into the scenic landscape. You’ll also get to grips with these ancestral techniques through hands-on heritage workshops in some outstandingly beautiful, yet little-known, sites.

From the months de Vaucluse to the Luberon, discovering the talents of rural folk

You’ll have the chance to do some short walks, with a minibus to take you to your starting points for 2-3 hours easy hiking each day in the Luberon and future Ventoux Regional Nature Parks, as well as the Montagne de Lure in Jean Giono country. It is in this part of Provence that you will discover one of the richest treasure troves of dry stone architecture in the Mediterranean, such as the Bories in the Luberon*, Ayguiers in the Monts de Vaucluse*, sheepfolds and barns on nearby Mont Ventoux and the Montagne de Lure*, not to mention fantastic examples of agricultural terraces and cobblestone lanes in charming Provencal villages. A master stone mason will introduce you to dry stone building techniques as you take part in restoration work on particularly spectacular sites. You’ll stay in a countryside bed and breakfast at the foot of Mont Ventoux, in double rooms. Each day you’ll strike out on adventures to discover the unique rural scenes between Mont Ventoux and the Luberon, with picnics at midday and evening meals with your hosts.



  • Arrival and reception at Avignon TGV railway station at 4pm or directly at the bed and breakfast at 6pm.
  • Welcome dinner with your guide and presentation of your holiday programme and the local area.


  • Day devoted to an easy hike with your guide to discover the Ayguiers* in the Monts de Vaucluse and picnic of tasty local produce at the abandoned village of Travignon, looking out over the Luberon.
  • First, short introductory session in dry stone building techniques with your master stone mason.
  • Dinner and night at your rural bed and breakfast.


  • A day out in the Luberon Regional Nature Park with a guided walk to seek out the remarkable Bories on the Plateau de Claparedes.
  • Picnic of local culinary delights followed by a visit the Conser¬vatoire des Terrasses de culture de Goult to marvel at the agricultural terraces restored by the Union APARE-CME association.
  • Dinner and night at your rural bed and breakfast.


  • Day devoted to discovering the “Mur de la Peste”* (Plague wall) and dry stone building workshop for beginners supervised by your master stone mason, followed by a walk along the wall to retrace its sombre history.
  • Culinary picnic, dinner and night at your rural bed and breakfast.


  • 3hr hike to discover the spectacular sheepfolds and stone barns at Contadour, an exceptional site of pastoral heritage which features in the many books written by the famous author, Jean Giono.
  • Culinary picnic, dinner and night at your rural bed and breakfast.


  • Second workshop to master dry stone construction techniques and make a heritage inventory of a sheepfold and barn on Mont Ventoux.
  • Picnic lunch followed by time to contemplate watching the sunset from the top of the “Giant of Provence”.
  • Dinner and night at your rural bed and breakfast.


  • Visit to the Village des Bories at Gordes, Sénanque Abbey and the hilltop villages of Venasque and Le Beaucet to seek out troglodyte dwellings hidden away in secret hollows.
  • Dinner and night at your rural bed and breakfast.


  • End of holiday - Transfer to Avignon TGV station in the morning.
  • Discovery trails will be provided to those who want to continuing roaming around the countryside.
