The island, the stone and its people

Brač is also known as the “island of white stone”. This precious, pure, material was used to build Parliament buildings in Vienna, Budapest, part of the aptly named White House in Washington and the lobby of the United Nations building, in New York. The most beautiful edifice built of Brač stone is Diocletian’s Palace, in Split (a UNESCO world heritage site). Back on the island, though, you’ll see many more humble abodes during your stay, including charming village houses, shepherds’ huts and dry stone walls that pepper and structure the island’s landscape. Everywhere you turn, you’ll witness this living, unbreakable and strong connection between stone, traditions and the modest island people.
