This activity-packed holiday offers you the chance to discover the outstanding natural and cultural qualities of rural Galloway, in Scotland. You’ll ramble and cycle through picturesque rural countryside, along spectacular coastlines, taste and make fine local produce and help local community volunteers on conservation projects that will also unleash your creative talents!

  • Varied daily excursions from your farmhouse accommodation, on foot, bike and by minibus.
  • Enjoy culinary delights from Galloway beef, scallops, local cheeses, fine whiskies and craft beers.
  • Special night time wildlife tour.
  • Creative art workshop with a renowned Scottish artist.
  • Conservation workshop on a former Scottish country estate with the National Trust for Scotland (NTS).
  • Discover Scotland’s own “Riviera” and National Scenic Area.



  • Arrival at Edinburgh Airport and train to Lockerbie, then minibus to farmhouse accommodation at Barncrosh Leisure, Castle Douglas.
  • Evening meal (with a local beer or whisky) and presentation of the holiday itinerary.


  • Morning – Visit NTS Threave Estate to discover Ospreys, an iconic bird of prey. Visit Threave Castle.
  • Lunch at Threave Garden visitor centre.
  • Afternoon – Introductory painting workshop and an artist’s eye of the Galloway landscape with renowned local artist, Hazel Campbell (2hrs). Afternoon tea included.
  • Evening – Return to Barncrosh for evening meal.


  • Morning – Presentation of the NTS’ landscape and nature conservation work. Discover local flora and fauna, their habitats and conservation.
  • Lunch on-site at Threave Garden visitor centre.
  • Afternoon – Visit Threave Garden with wildlife hide and a tour of Scottish baronial-style Threave House.
  • Evening – Return to Barncrosh for evening meal.


  • Morning – Threave Estate and introductory workshop on traditional stone dyking techniques (wall building) and culture and history of this important landscape feature.
  • Lunch at Threave Garden visitor centre.
  • Afternoon – Bike ride to scenic Kirkcudbright artists’ town (16km) with choice of visits to Tollbooth art gallery, the harbour where fish and shellfish are landed and processed from local boats, or Castle MacLellan pate workshop.
  • Evening – Gourmet Galloway foods dinner in Kirkcudbright, with Galloway beef, local scallops and pate, Loch Arthur bread and cheese, chocolates and whisky tasting.


  • Morning – Guided visit to Loch Arthur, a community charity helping people with learning disabilities. Taste award-winning cheese and breads. Lunch and gift pack provided.
  • Afternoon – Visit to Castle Douglas “Food town”, then free time to relax at Barncrosh or optional visits to other local historic sites.
  • Evening – Dinner at Barncrosh, then a special Noctural Wildlife Tour from 10 pm, thermal imaging and night vision binoculars to get close to wildlife without detection.


  • Morning and Afternoon – Late start for an 8km guided walk to the ‘Scottish Riviera’ and National Scenic Area.
  • Picnic lunch at a beauty spot en route.
  • Walk on to Kippford village, and enjoy a beer at a shoreline pub.
  • Evening – Return to Barncrosh for evening meal.
  • Guided visit of the village before returning to the farm.
  • Dinner and night at the farm.


  • Morning – A final practical dyking workshop with NTS staff to build your own wall and leave your mark for posterity.
  • Afternoon - Packed lunch and visit Bellymack Hill red kite feeding station (RSPB) then hike to Livingston Hill with panoramic views over Galloway coast and countryside.
  • Return to Castle Douglas and visit Sulwath brewery for an ‘end of tour’ local craft beer.
  • Evening – Last night barbeque at Barncrosh.

Saturday 17th June

  • Depart. Transfer to Lockerbie and train to Edinburgh.
  • Options available to extend your stay in Edinburgh.
